UAAP Season 81: Red Warriors upset Fighting Maroons in season opener

University of the East scored an early upset over University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 81 men's volleyball tournament.
University of the East opened the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament with a shocking upset that left University of the Philippines stunned, 20-25, 25-10, 25-22, 25-21, Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Clifford Inoferio and Lloyd Josafat teamed up on offense to help the Red Warriors snap a 20-game losing streak and start the season on a winning note.
“Sabi namin na panghahawakan talaga namin 'yung pride namin this season. Gusto lang namin suklian 'yung binibigay sa amin ng school,” said UE rookie coach Victorio Turing IV, who replaced last year’s interim mentor Rod Roque.
Inoferio fired 12 attacks in his 14-point season debut while Josafat finished with 13 markers for the Red Warriors, who last tasted victory back in Season 79 against Adamson University. Aljhon Abalon and Geric Ortega posted 10 points each for the Red Warriors, who took advantage of the Maroons’ 36 errors.
UE recovered mightily after yielding the opening set with a masterful dismantling of UP that turned the tables around.
The Red Warriors’ rode the crest of their momentum following their second set demolition to finish off the Diliman-based squad in one hour and 49 minutes.
John Mark Millete posted 17 points while Nicole Brylle Consuelo finished with 12 markers for the Maroons.
