Bernadette Flora’s role this coming UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament is to provide the much-needed point production and energy.
She’ll bring it with swag and all.
Love her or hate her, Flora’s on-court moxie won’t disappear any time soon especially with her filling in the shoes left behind by Queen Falcon Jema Galanza.
“Siguro kaya ko naman din nagagawa yun kasi doon ko nakukuha ang lakas ng loob na gusto kong makamit,” said Flora, who during the pre-season showed a glimpse of her swag in the Premier Volleyball League. “Di ko naman po kasalan na ganoon ako eh kasi yun naman talaga ako saka game lang po ‘yun.”
But Flora is quick to clear that it’s all part of her game inside the court.
“Sa personal mabait po ako,” she said with a smile.
Buckling down to serious matters, Flora knows that she will need to step up her game to help the rebuilding Adamson perform better this tournament after a share of the fifth to sixth place finish with University of the Philippines last year accounting only six wins with eight defeats.
Her task is to fill in the void left by open spiker Galanza, who averaged 14.7 points per game last year.
“Magiging challenge yun sa akin kasi si Ate Jema kilala bilang best scorer sa amin dati. Gagawin ko lang din po ang best ko para makatulong sa team,” said Flora, who was seldom-used last season.
Flora displayed great potential during the off-season after averaging 13.5 points per game behind Eli Soyud’s 17.2 markers per outing in the PVL Collegiate Conference where Adamson shocked the competition with a clean sweep of the seven-game elimination round before faltering to settle for a third place finish.
With injury woes plaguing the Lady Falcons in the Open Conference, Flora became the go-to-player of Adamson on offense, averaging almost 10 points per game against the best commercial clubs in the league.
Unfortunately, the Lady Falcons failed to win a single game.
“Siguro po natutunan namin na ‘wag mag-give up sa lahat ng games kahit na alam naming kulang kami at wala masyadong laban,” said Flora.
Graduating opposite hitter Soyud sees Flora as a possible heir apparent of Galanza with her pre-season showing and confidence.
“Ang laki ng in-improve niya matapos 'yung Season 80. Sobrang laki nung in-improve niya ngayon lalo na 'yun nga, malaki 'yung spot na kailangan niya i-fill in,” said Soyud. “Ang laki talaga 'yung in-improve niya ngayon, na mas kaya niyang pantayan si Jema.”
All eyes will be on Flora's performance this season and her contribution will determine which direction the Lady Falcons will fly.
