Far Eastern University recovered from a first set meltdown to turn back National University.
Far Eastern University shrugged off a late first set meltdown to turn back the young National University squad, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-12, Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Freshman Lycha Ebon and Celine Domingo led the Lady Tamaraws’ charge to join University of the Philippines in the opening day winners’ list.
Ebon finished with 13 points off nine attacks and four aces laced with four excellent receptions for a smashing debut for FEU, which punished the Lady Bulldogs from the service line with 16 aces. Heather Guino-o and Domingo got 11 markers each while Jerrili Malabanan scored 10 for the Lady Tams.
"Obviously, I'm happy that our team won the game but I think there's a lot of things that we still gonna work on," siad skipper Malabanan. "So from this first game we saw things like receive and other skills that we still gonna work on."
FEU squandered a 21-14 lead in the opening set as the Morayta-based squad allowed the Lady Bulldogs to mount an 11-1 counterattack to steal the frame.
The Lady Tams regrouped just in time to put a muzzle on the Lady Bulldogs, who lost rookie setter Joyme Cagande late in the third set after sustaining a left knee ligament sprain following a collision with Roselyn Doria.
Without a backup playmaker, NU rookie coach Norman Miguel was forced to field Klymince Orillaneda as setter for the remainder of the match.
Freshman Ivy Lacsina debuted with 14 points, all from attacks, while rookie Princess Robles and Audrey Paran had 13 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Lady Bulldogs.
