Far Eastern University made short work of defending champion National University to open the UAAP Season 81 men's volleyball tournament.
Far Eastern University buckled down to business right from the opening serve and muzzled the repeat-seeking National University, 25-12, 25-18, 25-17, Saturday to start its campaign in the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tamaraws banked on its disciplined offense and superb net defense to frustrate the Bulldogs.
FEU committed only nine errors the whole match and scored eight kill blocks against one of the best attacking teams in the league.
“Una siyempre ‘yung dedication and willingness ng mga players kasi right from the start naman hindi lang kami nagpunta rito to just to represent, pumunta kami rito mayroon kaming goal,” said FEU coach Rey Diaz. “Good to see na ang mga players napakasarap kasama sa court kasi naka-focus sila sa goal na gusto nilang makuha.”
Richard Solis got nine points while Jude Garcia and JP Bugaoan posted eight markers each for the Tams, who got 32 points off NU’s errors.
The Morayta-based squad fired 33 attack points behind Owen Suarez’s 22 excellent sets.
FEU also took advantage of the Bulldogs spotty plays as NU was forced to use freshman Ave Retamar as setter after the departure of seasoned setter Kim Dayandante.
Bryan Bagunas scored all but one of his 15 points off kills while freshman Angelo Almendras finished with six for the Bulldogs.
