Three-time defending champion downed archrival Ateneo de Manila University in an early clash of titans in the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament.
Other than a third set meltdown, four-peat-seeking De La Salle University came out with well-sharpened arrows to shoot down Ateneo de Manila University, 25-14, 25-17, 16-25, 25-19, Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Graduating hitter Des Cheng punished the Lady Eagles with her attacks coupled with on-court swags to frustrate Ateneo while May Luna came up with heady plays for DLSU in the fourth set.
"Hindi naman madaling kalaban ang Ateneo. Siguro sa first game naging pabor lang sa amin lahat ng situations kaya siguro kami nanalo," said DLSU coach Ramil De Jesus.
Cheng finished displayed her all-around game with 13 points coming off eight spikes, two kill blocks and three aces while adding 14 excellent receptions and nine digs for the Lady Spikers, who barely felt the exit of Kim Kianna Dy, former Most Valuable Player Majoy Baron and libero Dawn Macandili after last season. Luna scored all but one of her 11 points on kills while rookie Jolina Dela Cruz debuted with 11 markers .
The Taft-based squad took advantage of Ateneo’s spotty floor defense and error-filled first two sets to set up the tempo of the match. The Lady Eagles fought back in the third set before Luna and Dela Cruz teamed up in the fourth set to give DLSU a 19-13 lead.
Ateneo never got a chance to mount a significant counter before Cheng finished the Lady Eagles off with an off the block hit followed by a sharp ace.
Kat Tolentino was the only Ateneo player in double figures with 16 points with 13 coming off attacks while graduating middles Bea De Leon and Maddie Madayag combined for 13 markers.
