Four-time NCAA champion coach Obet Javier of Arellano University is one of the game officials calling the games in UAAP Season 81 volleyball.
Call him referee Obet.
Four-time NCAA champion coach Obet Javier of Arellano University found a new calling in the UAAP, standing at the referee’s podium and officiating the games in Season 81 Volleyball Tournaments.
Javier, who a week ago steered the Lady Chiefs to a three-peat in the oldest collegiate league in the country, called the men’s volleyball tournament curtain-raiser match between Adamson University and University of Sto. Tomas at the MOA Arena Sunday.
The mentor, who coached University of the East men’s team years ago, was the first referee of the match that went the distance.
“Ang nangyari kasi kaya hindi ako nakakapito dito dahil di ba nag-coach ako dati sa UE. Bawal kasi yun so ngayon nabigyan ako ng pagkakataon grinab ko na yung opportunity,” said Javier, a national referee since 2001.
Javier is not new in officiating UAAP games as he had worked as referee before in high school tournaments.
Being the one of the game officials, Javier knows that he has to make the right calls and be as patient as possible when it comes to dealing with coaches and players, who in times would question calls that might not go their way.
“Kailangan lang composed mo ‘yung sarili mo kasi alam mo naman ang mga coaches, coach din ako so alam ko ‘yung pakiramdam nila,” he said. “Kailangan lang alam mo ‘yung ano ‘yung binibigyan mo desisyon para kung saka-sakali di ka mawawala.”
And what a challenging debut it was for Javier.
“Para sa akin maganda kasi five sets kumbaga na-test ‘yung kaalamanan ko sa officiating,” said referee Javier, whose baptism of was Adamson’s 33-31, 23-25, 16-25, 25-15, 16-14, win over UST that lasted for two hours and 16 minutes.
