UAAP 81 Football: Late penalty helps Adamson draw NU
NU and Adamson battled to a 1-1 draw to kick off the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament

A late penalty from Jackson Ramos helped Adamson University hold National University to a 1-1 draw to open the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football tournament festivities, Sunday morning at the FEU-Fern Football Field in Diliman, Quezon City.

It wasn't until late in the second half that the scoreless deadlock was broken, with senior Mike Arbela putting the Bulldogs ahead, 1-0 in the 79th minute.

Seemingly headed for what appeared to be another loss, the Soaring Falcons caught a break in the form of a handball inside the box committed by NU in the 85th minute, resulting in a penalty.

Adamson's Jackson Ramos sank the penalty to event things up at one goal apiece, but it wasn't without contest from keeper Christian Betanio.

Both sides tried to come up with another conversion in the remaining minutes of the match, but to no avail, as they settled for a 1-1 draw.

"Nung first half, sayang yung mga opportunities. Maganda yung pinakita namin nung first half, but dun sa latter part during the second half, medyo bumigay kami, sa last 20 minutes siguro," said new Adamson head coach Arvin Soliman, who helps put Adamson on the board in his first outing in the UAAP. "Buti na lang, naka-bawi kami."

On the other side of the coin, third-year NU Head Coach Mari Aberasturi could only lament the missed chance at an opening day win.

"Sayang," Abersturi said. "Sayang kasi 1-0 na, and then nagka-penalty. Pero ganun yung game, diba?"

"Next time na lang, i-adjust lang yung errors ng team, and hopefully maka-adjust sa next game," he added.

NU and Adamson each earn one point after the opening day draw.
