University of Sto. Tomas barged in the win column at the expense of Ateneo de Manila University.
University of Sto. Tomas recovered its bearing just in time to avoid a monumental collapse as the Tigers escaped with a 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12, win over Ateneo de Manila University Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 men's volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigers responded to the challenge of head coach Odjie Mamon following their defeat in the season-opener with a hard-earned victory to join their victim at 1-1 win-loss slate.
Manuel Medina and Joshua Umandal paced UST with 22 and 20 points, respectively, and combined for 38 of the Tigers' 62 attack points. Beach volleyball champion Jaron Requinton blasted 14 points while Jayvee Sumagaysay had 12 markers for the Tigers, who showed balanced scoring behind Timothy Tajanlangit's 32 excellent sets.
UST flirted with disaster after squandering a two-set lead as Ateneo behind Tony Koyfman fought its way back into the game to force a decider.
The Tigers, who came from a five-set defeat at the hands of Adamson on Sunday, engaged the Blue Eagles in a tough race to the finish before coming up on top in the two-hour, 21-minute battle.
Koyfman led the Blue Eagles with 22 points, John Rivera had 15 while Ron Medalla and Chumason Njigha scored 11 and 10 markers, respectively, in a lost cause.
