Kai Sotto claimed his first-ever Season MVP on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Hours later, however, he and Ateneo de Manila High School were dethroned by Nazareth School of National University which reigned supreme in the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament.
And so, the 7-foot-1, 16-year-old’s most dominant season – individually, at least – has come to a close.
Now, the question becomes will Sotto be back to try and reclaim the championship next season or will he fly out to train overseas?
For now, the answer to that question is yet to be determined. Asked what’s next for him after their season came to a close on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, he answered, “’Di ko pa alam kasi. Pati ako, ‘di ko pa alam kasi focus muna ako na tapusin ‘tong academic school year na ‘to.”
He then continued, “Challenging din kasi ‘to sa akin dahil parang Finals din. Dun muna ako magfo-focus muna.”
In that case, it’s safe to say that he will still be around for the rest of the school year. How long is that? “One and a half weeks pa,” he said.
Before the beginning of the season, it was reported that the Blue Eaglets’ towering teen had offers to play in Europe or in the US.
Not long after that, however, it was made clear that Sotto would be staying in Katipunan – for UAAP 81 Juniors, at the very least. “Kai is a very driven student-athlete. As of now, he is focused on graduating from Ateneo Junior High School this school year,” head coach Reggie Varilla said then.
At this moment, at the very least, those offers are far from the mind of the UAAP 81 Juniors MVP. “Maraming mga offer talaga, pero’ di ko masabi (kung ano-ano) kasi tatay ko nakakaalam. Sinasabi niya lang sa akin kapag malapit na,” he said.
He then continued, “Pero yun nga, kahit sina daddy, sinasabi sa aking mag-focus muna rito sa academic school year kasi patapos na e. Yun nga, talagang challenging talaga sa akin kaya ibibigay ko lahat dito.”
As for what the future holds, Sotto had a short and sweet remark. As he put it, “Kung ano mang mangyari, yun yung mangyayari.”
