Bulldogs sweep Red Warriors for first win
Bryan Bagunas led National University to a straight sets win over University of the East.

Repeat-seeking National University vented its ire on University of the East with a 25-13, 25-18, 25-18 drubbing Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 men's volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Coming off a stinging sweep at the hands of Far Eastern University last week, the Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders to take down the Red Warriors in just 74 minutes to join their victim at 1-1 win-loss record together with University of Sto. Tomas and Ateneo de Manila University.

Young setter Joshua Retamar, who took the starting spot of ineligible veteran playmaker Kim Dayandante, bounced back from a jittery debut and tallied 23 excellent sets to help NU unleash 46 attack points.

Last year's Finals MVP Bryan Bagunas hammered 22 attacks in his 24-point outing and added seven excellent receptions for the Bulldogs.

Rookie Angelo Almendras helped out with 10 points while James Natividad and Kim Malabunga combined for 14 markers for NU, which limited its errors to only 18 compared to its 32 miscues in its first game.

Retamar got his groove going early and was quick to adjust with his hitters - a good improvement from his last outing that saw the rookie dish out only 18 excellent sets.

"'Yung nangyari noong last game, nawala kami sa focus. Medyo nagkaproblema kami sa setter kasi medyo nanibago siya and nawala sa tono 'yung mga spiker," said NU coach Dante Alinsunurin. "Pero nakaka-adjust naman na siya. Natututo na sila kasi alam nilang mga rookies na kailangan talaga sila ng team."

UE failed to score a followup to its four-set upset win over University of the Philippines last week.

Clifford Inoferio paced the Red Warriors with eight points while Lloyd Josafat and Angelu Noel Alba combined for 14 markers.
