National University barged in the win column at the expense of University of the East.
Undermanned National University bared its sharp teeth to topple a more experienced University of the East side, 25-19, 25-23, 25-19, Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Converted playmaker Joni Chavez took the spot of injured rookie setter Joyme Cagande, who could miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a knee injury in her debut last week, to orchestrate the decent offensive flow of the Lady Bulldogs, who captured their first win in two outings.
"Masaya kami, hindi ko ma-express kasi alam naman nating lahat yung struggles ng team eh. Sobra-sobrang challenge yung nangyayari sa amin. Dito sa pagkapanalo namin masaya kami sa nangyari," said NU coach Norman Miguel, who scored his first win as women's mentor.
Freshmen Ivy Lacsina and Princess Robles together with veterans Audrey Paran and Roselyn Doria provided the firepower to pace NU, which is down to only 10 available players. Lacsina scored 18 points with 14 coming off attacks while Robles posted seven attacks for nine points.
Skipper Doria got 12 markers highlighted by five kill blocks while Paran finished with 10 for the Lady Bulldogs, who had 36 attack points behind Chavez's 14 excellent sets.
The Lady Warriors absorbed their second straight defeat and 13th straight head-to-head losing slump against NU.
Judith Abil led UE with 10 points and 10 excellent receptions while Me-Anne Menrez got eight markers laced with seven digs.
