Ateneo scored a late equalizer to hold FEU to a 1-1 draw in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament
Ateneo de Manila University scored late in the match to hold Far Eastern University to a 1-1 draw in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament, Sunday morning at the FEU-FERN Football Field in Diliman, Quezon City.
Looking to capitalize off the momentum of their big opening day win, the Tamaraws came out aggressive and pushed the action against the Blue Eagles, who were coming off a loss to University of the East, Thursday.
Early on, it looked like FEU were about to send Ateneo to their second consecutive loss, as skipper Poi Saldivar connected on a header off a well-placed cross from Gio Pabualan to put the Tamaraws ahead, 1-0 in the 44th minute.
The Blue Eagles rallied back in the second half as they snatched momentum from the Tamaraws, which ultimately paid off late in the match as Ateneo captain Julian Roxas found the equalizer in the 85th minute.
With five minutes of added time given, both sides looked to break the deadlock once more but neither could come up with a conversion, as the 1-1 scoreline stood at the end of the match
"The first half, for me, it was a good performance from FEU, so I think my first 45 was off. The good thing in the second half is that the players moved on so I think we were lucky in the second half, we had a lot of chances," said Ateneo head coach Jaypee Merida.
"It's good na we go home with a point, but of course our objective for today's game was to get the three points, but we didn't perform in the first half, so ito lang siguro ang binigay sa amin," he added.
With the draw, Ateneo earns their first points of the season, moving to one draw and one loss for one point.
FEU meanwhile moves to one win and one draw for four points and share of the top spot.
