Ateneo de Manila University came back from two sets down to capture its second straight win.
Ateneo de Manila University completed a thrilling comeback from two sets down to silence Far Eastern University, 14-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 15-12, Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Kat Tolentino led the charge of the Lady Eagles, who exacted revenge over their Final Four tormentors last year, to improve to 2-1 win-loss record tied with University of the Philippines and University of Sto. Tomas.
Tolentino scored 19 points with 17 coming off attacks and two kill blocks to pace the Katipunan-based squad.
The Lady Eagles showed nerves of steel in the closing stretch of the tight fifth set. Madayag tied the frame at 11 on a running hit but sent her service wide in the next play that put the Lady Tamaraws back on top. FEU crumbled under pressure, committing three straight errors with Kyle Negrito throwing back-to-back miscues, before Tolentino sealed the victory with a crosscourt kill.
“’Di namin alam kung anong nangyari sa amin sa first two sets,” said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro.
“Nagtiwala muna sila sa sarili nila and the skills came out,” he added. “Lumabas ang resiliency ng mga bata.”
Maddie Madayag got 14 points with 12 coming off kills while Deanna Wong tallied 26 excellent sets and posted eight markers for the Lady Eagles. Ponggay Gaston had nine markers, 16 digs and 18 excellent receptions while Jules Samonte got seven points, 17 digs and 12 receives for Ateneo.
The Lady Tamaraws, who started off on fire before fading, dropped their second straight match in three games.
Heather Guino-o scored 16 points, 14 coming off attacks, and had nine receptions while Domingo and Malabanan chipped in 13 markers each in a lost cause for FEU, which threw away 38 points on errors including seven in the deciding frame.
