UAAP Season 81: Tigresses nip Lady Maroons

University of Sto. Tomas returned in the win column at the expense of erstwhile unbeaten University of the Philippines.
University of Sto. Tomas shrugged off a rusty start before coming back with all guns blazing to put a dent in University of the Philippines’ erstwhile unbeaten record, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20, Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
High-flying Sisi Rondina, Milena Alessandrini and rookie sensation Eya Laure delivered the goods to tow the Tigresses back in the win column for a 2-1 win-loss record tied with its victim.
Alessandrini scored 22 points off 19 kills and three blocks for UST, which exacted revenge over its Philippine Superliga Collegiate Grand Slam championship tormentors during the offseason. The Fil-Italian sophomore added 15 digs and 10 excellent receptions for the Tigresses, who played a UP side missing the services of starting setter Ayel Estranero.
Laure scored 18 points while Rondina posted 17 markers with 15 coming off attacks for UST, which pounded 51 spikes.
“First set talagang struggle. Lahat na, ang dami nang thought cloud sa ulo. So ginamitan ko na ng mga henyo moves sa second set," said UST coach Kungfu Reyes. "Ni-remind ko na tama nga naman, marami silang pwedeng gawin. Nagkakamali pero doon sila nagd-dwell doon sa mali nila. That's why nabitbit namin hanggang matapos ang first set."
"Mabuti naman, noong second and third, fourth, na-overcome naman namin ang mga errors namin," added Reyes.
The Tigresses recovered from a sluggish start and controlled the third set with a huge 21-8 lead. The Lady Maroons cut their deficit to 22-15 before Laure scored three of thr frames last four points to put UST ahead, 2-1, in the match.
UST opened a 17-11 advantage in the fourth. UP tried to mount a comeback but never got closer than two points as the Tigresses escape with the win.
Rookie Marianne Sotomil took the starting spot of Estranero, who was sidelined because of food poisoning, and tallied 32 exellent sets .
Tots Carlos paced the Lady Maroons with 20 points anchored on 18 attacks, Isa Molde had a quiet outing with 13 markers while Justine Dorog, who hurt her knee late in the fourth, finished with 10 points.
