University of the East earned its first win in three games at the expense of Adamson University.
University of the East barged in the win column at the expense of listless Adamson University, 20-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-22, Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Judith Abil and Me-Anne Mendrez paced the Lady Warriors, who improved to 1-2 win-loss record tied with National University and Far Eastern University.
Abil scored all of her 22 points on attacks and added 20 digs and 21 excellent receptions while Mendrez played through pain in her right shoulder to finish with 14 markers - all from attacks - to help UE hand new coach Karl Dimaculangan his first victory as mentor.
"After ng gme namin after UP talagang bumagsak kami sa NU as in collapse. Parang hindi kami ang naglaro nun, inano ko na lang sa kanila na maglaro lang kayo ng maayos. Hindi naman natin kailangang ma-pressure. Alam nating nag-improve tayo hindi doon natatapos," said Dimaculangan.
Geline Olarve scored 14 markers while Seth Rodriguez got 12 points with four coming off kill blocks for the Lady Warriors, who dropped 59 attacks behind Laizah Bendong's 32 excellent sets.
UE came back from a two-point deficit in the fourth set with an 8-3 closing blitz to silence the Lady Falcons, who remained winless in three outings.
Down, 17-19, in the fourth frame, the Lady Warriors scored four straight points with two coming off Adamson's miscues. Lady Falocon Bernadette Flora tied the set at 21 before Abil brought UE back on top.
Jasmine Alcayde put the Lady Warriors at match point before Eli Soyud sent her attack wide that closed the two-hour, nine-minute battle.
Soyud scored 20 points off 14 points, four kill blocks and two aces while Flora and rookie Krich Macaslang closed with 15 and nine markers, respectively, for the Lady Falcons.
