UAAP 81 Football: UP scores comeback win in season debut
JB Borlongan scored the game-winning goal as UP came back from a goal down to defeat NU, 2-1

Defending champions University of the Philippines opened their season with a comeback victory as the rallied from a goal down to defeat National University, 2-1 in UAAP Season 81 Men's Football action, Thursday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.

Looking to snatch their first win of the season, NU pushed the action early in the match and got on the board first, courtesy of Joshua Broche's screamer from outside the box in the 19th minute.

In the 32nd minute, it was Kyle Magdato who came to the rescue for the defending champions, as he made good on a strike inside the box off an assist from skipper King Miyagi to even things up at one goal apiece.

In the second half, it was all UP, as the defending champions were again on point defensively, keeping the NU offense from mounting any significant attack.

In the 53rd minute, JB Borlongan gave the Fighting Maroons the lead after converting an impossible free kick goal, sending the ball to the top left corner, away from keeper Ross Lee Lawagan's hands.

With their unbeaten streak on the line, NU looked to get a goal back and came close in the final minutes, but ultimately could not convert as UP survived to earn all three points.

"I think during the first half, we were too relaxed, I think only a few of us wanted really to win those balls and play really hard," said Borlongan after the match. "Most of us relaxed, but buti na lang sa second half gumising kami and naka-adjust sa game."

Borlongan added that he was happy to be able to make up for a lackluster start by scoring what would be the game-winning goal.

"The first half, I was coming from a not good start. When I was able to put the ball in the net, it was a game booster for me, kasi parang nabawi ko yung pangit na start ko nung half."

UP starts their campaign with a win and three points.

NU drops to two draws and a loss for two points.
