Know eight things you might not know about Eya!
Celebrated rookie Eya Laure is making waves in her quick transition to the collegiate level, just three games in for the UST Golden Tigresses.
It seems that she has not missed a beat as the touted freshman is hoping to capture rookie of the year honors in the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament.
Find out eight things you might not know about Eya!
1. She first fell in love with basketball.
Being a daughter of former MBA and PBA big man Eddie Laure, Ejiya, the second-born offspring got hooked with the most popular sport in the country.
Laure even recalled as she played center in their village and even fought against the hardened players in her area.
The 16-year veteran Eddie even thought that Laure might become the first Filipina WNBA player.
“Sabi ni Daddy, ‘Galingan mo dyan. Someday, malay mo, mag-WNBA ka.’ Kaya hindi ko talaga inisip na mag-vo-volleyball ako,” shared Eya.
However, other things were destined for her.
2. She was discovered by Kung Fu Reyes while playing basketball.
The opposite hitter was accidentally discovered by then-UST Junior Golden Tigresses head coach 'Kung Fu' Reyes shooting hoops during older sister EJ's volleyball training in Espana.
Seeing how her height and physical skills might also translate in volleyball, Reyes asked her parents whether Eya also wanted a shot just like her sister.
"Nagustuhan ko tapos yun, tuloy-tuloy na," she recalled.
She was then in elementary, and started training with the high school squad when she was Grade 5.
3. Reyes had envisioned her as the next Tina Salak.
Unlike the opposite hitter we know her today, Eya was first seen as the next great setter for UST by her longtime mentor Reyes.
The coach said that he had envisioned Laure setting for the offense, much like FEU and Philippine volleyball legend Tina Salak.
Laure even started off her high school career as the setter for the Junior Golden Tigresses, where she was awarded as the league's Best Setter, somehow a fulfillment of Kung Fu's vision.
4. Eya had a storied high school career.
Playing for the now-UST Junior High School, Eya would catch the league by storm by excelling in different aspects of the game.
As a rookie, she orchestrated UST's attack, en route earning Rookie of the Year honors for UST High.
She, along with her MVP sister clinched gold for them the very next season, where the siblings were recognized as Best Attacker and Best Setter, respectively.
After taking the reigns from EJ, she then unfurled her wings and soared to becoming Best Attacker and MVP herself in Season 78.
Eya had seen the latest development in her game by shifting to the utility and becoming Best Opposite Hitter in the process.
5. Laure was in part inspired by Aiza Maizo
Eya shared how she was introduced to volleyball by her grandfather, Ruperto Cruz, touting the brillance of former Golden Tigress Aiza Maizo-Pontillas.
Maizo, of course, was an integral part of the last UST title squad.
“Lolo’s girl ako. Lahat ng mga sinasabi ng Lolo ko, pinaniniwalaan ko siya. Sabi niya, ‘Si Aiza Maizo. Siya yung pinaka-magaling sa UST.’ Tapos hinahanap-hanap namin yun for ilang days sa gym. Simula nun, nung nalaman ko na siya si Aiza Maizo, nanonood na ako ng training at games,” Laure revealed.
That's why she decided to go to watch UST practices, which brings us to today.
6. She has a fondness for traveling.
As a travel management student at the College of Tourism Management and Hospitality at UST, Laure had indicated that she would like to become a flight attendant if she decides to have a change in career track.
It is also her ultimate dream to travel the world, and is starting her dreams already, traveling to multiple spots in the Philippines and around Asia.
7. Her celebrity crush is James Reid
The soon to be 20-year old, who turns so this March 21, shared that she has developed an admiration for Kapamilya actor James Reid.
With his dashing looks and fondness of sports, we may see a future project that may involve the two here on ABS-CBN!
8. She is also a vlogger
Well, if Eya decides to become an actress, why not? She has the looks and is trying to develop her on-cam skills!
Laure has already set up a vlog on her YouTube channel, featuring various topics like her trips with the Golden Tigresses, their antics, make-up reviews, and the like.
Here's her entry in UST's trip to the ABS-CBN Sports office during their OBB and photo shoot.
