It was a tough fight between us and La Salle, kitang kita naman na lumaban din sila, but I guess we really wanted to win and we felt like binibigay na sa amin pero kailangan talaga namin akuin ‘yung laro so eventually we got the win for today -- Ayel Estranero
Graduating setter Ayel Estranero watched from the sidelines as University of the Philippines bowed down to University of Sto. Tomas last week.
Now fully recovered from food poisoning that barred her from seeing action the last time out, the playmaker made sure that the Lady Maroons marched in the right direction against three-time defending champion De La Salle University.
Estranero played big in her return as UP outlasted the erstwhile unbeaten Lady Spikers, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12, Saturday to tie their victim at the top spot in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
“It was a tough fight between us and La Salle, kitang kita naman na lumaban din sila, but I guess we really wanted to win and we felt like binibigay na sa amin pero kailangan talaga namin akuin ‘yung laro so eventually we got the win for today,” said Estranero, who tallied 38 excellent sets.
The playmaker orchestrated the Lady Maroons’ fluid offense that helped UP fire 56 attack points. Estranero added four points with two coming off aces.
The win snapped UP’s three-game head-to-head losing slump against DLSU and improved to 3-1 win-loss record.
For Estranero, the victory was a good morale-boost not only for her but for her squad’s goal of making it back into the Final Four after missing the cut the past two seasons.
“Not only because I missed the last game but siguro there’s more motivation ‘coz it’s my last playing year and siyempre nandoon ‘yung goal para mag-Final Four and mag-champion,” she said. “So every game is really important, so every game sobrang motivated namin, hindi lang ako pero the entire the team na hopefully, ma-reach namin ‘yung goal namin.”
With her leadership needed to win big games like today, Estranero learned the value of keeping herself healthy. And in her case, to be careful with what she eats.
“Sobra po. Kung puwede lang hindi kumain pero yeah. More careful with what I eat and what I actually do so siguro,” said Estranero. “It’s more of a learning experience din na kailangan ko talagang alagaan sarili ko to be able to contribute.”
