UAAP 81 Football: UP edges out Ateneo for second straight win

UP bested Katipunan rivals Ateneo, 2-1 in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament
Defending champions University of the Philippines bested Katipunan rivals Ateneo de Manila University, 2-1, to notch their second straight win in the UAAP Season 81 Men’s Football Tourament, Sunday morning at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.
Daniel Saavedra put the Fighting Maroons ahead late in the first half after a handball violation by Ateneo awarded UP a penalty kick in the 41st minute.
Striker King Miyagi doubled the Fighting Maroons lead in 49th minute.
Ateneo managed to pull one back courtesy of substitute Rupert Baña, scoring off a free kick in the 79th minute.
Ateneo’s rally would ultimately fall short however, as UP held on for the win.
The defending champions now have two wins in their first two matches for six points.
Ateneo meanwhile, has a draw and two losses for one point.
De La Salle University was also victorious after scoring twice to defeat National University, 2-0.
Mateo Alegre wasted no time in putting DLSU on the board as he scored in the very first minute of action, followed by a Mikio Umilin free kick conversion in the 31st minute.
With the win, DLSU improves to two wins and two losses for six points in the season. NU meanwhile drops to two draws and two losses for two points.
University of the East seized control of the top spot in the standings early in the tournament following a scoreless draw against Adamson University.
Both sides had chances to find the back of the net, with UE’s Mar Diano and Adamson’s Bless Brian Jumo II getting attempts at goal, only to see their efforts denied by the crossbar.
With the draw, UE improves to two wins, one draw, and one loss for seven points.
Adamson moves to three draws and one loss for three points.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Tournament kicked off Saturday at the Circulo Verde Football Field, with Season 81 runners-up University of Santo Tomas opening the season with a comeback 2-1 victory over University of the Philippines.
Andrea Montilla put UP ahead in the 20th minute, but a pair of goals from Shelah Cadag in the 64th and 81st minutes secured the win for the Golden Tigresses.
Far Eastern University also scored an opening day win in the women’s tournament, blasting Ateneo de Manila, 3-0.
Joyce Onrubia and Jovelle Sudaria scored in the first half, while Roselle Lecera added the final touch in the 5th minute of injury time.
