UAAP Season 81: Gusto ko silang mag-champion -- Getigan
Gusto ko silang mag-champion talaga. Yun ang goal ko -- Adamson U coach Onyok Getigan

Newly-appointed Adamson University head coach Onyok Getigan didn’t hold back in his first postgame UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament interview.

The multi-titled high school mentor gave a bold answer when asked about his goal for the Lady Falcons.

“Gusto ko silang mag-champion talaga. Yun ang goal ko. 'Yun talaga ang gusto ko talaga. Minsan hindi ko binanggit pero yun ang laging nasa ulo ko,” said Getigan following a successful debut that saw Adamson sweep past National University, 25-15, 25-19, 25-22, for its first win of the season Sunday at the Big Dome.

Getigan, who steered the NCR high school squad to three Palarong Pambansa gold medal finishes, replaced Air Padda as head coach Thursday. Padda called the shot for Adamson since Season 79 before being replaced three games into Season 81. The American mentor had a 7-24 win-loss record.

Getigan, who also handles the Kings Montessori and Adamson U girls’ team, officially started his tenure just a day before his first UAAP game.

The mentor also served as Padda’s deputy so his transition didn’t need much adjustment.

The motivated Lady Falcons sustained their intensity throughout the match to barge in the win column and tie their victim and University of the East with 1-3 slate.

Getigan’s coaching style seemed to fit well with Adamson U.

“Simple lang. Simple. Wala ng pala-palabok pa o wala ng ibang gagawin pa,” he said.

For the future, Getigan looks to make minimal changes in Adamson’s system as they aim high.
