UAAP Season 81: Lady Eagles extend win streak to three

Ateneo de Manila University moved up to a share of the lead after sweeping University of the East.
Ateneo de Manila University tasted a share of the lead for the first time after demolishing University of the East, 25-15, 25-21, 25-16, Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Big Dome.
The Lady Eagles displayed its fine form early and sustained its momentum the whole match for a quick work of the Lady Warriors to join three-time defending champion De La Salle University and University of the Philippines with 3-1 win-loss slate.
"UE in the second set they challenged us but I accepted the challenge. I told my players to accept the challenge. They will be challenging you but the mindset must be on the right way pa rin. Ganoon pa rin tamang mindset and good thing it favored us in the second set," said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro.
Veterans Kat Tolentino, Maddie Madayag and Bea De Leon led Ateneo’s charge.
Tolentino delivered 13 points off eight attacks, three kill blocks and a pair of aces for the Lady Eagles. Madayag got 11 points while graduating skipper De Leon scored all of her markers off attacks. Jules Samonte had an all-around performance with eight points, 12 excellent receptions and six digs for Ateneo.
After cruising in the opening set, the Lady Eagles encountered stiff resistance from the Lady Warriors in the second frame keeping the game close, 22-20, before Ateneo scored a finishing 3-1 blitz capped by a Tolentino kill.
The Lady Eagles broke an 11-11 deadlock in the third frame with a blistering scoring spurt to complete the sweep.
Judith Abil scored 14 points with 18 excellent receptions while Me-Anne Mendrez had nine markers for UE, which dropped to 1-3. The Lady Warriors committed 24 errors and allowed Ateneo to land five aces.
