UAAP Season 81: Tams take win no. 5; Tigers back in winning form

University of Sto. Tomas rediscovered its winning ways with a sweet sweep of De La Salle University.
Far Eastern University needed only 72 minutes to claim its fifth straight win in a 25-10, 25-21, 25-18 rout of University of the East on Wednesday to remain on top of the heap in the UAAP Season 81 men's volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Redijohn Paler and JP Bugaoan conspired to keep the Tamaraws' record unblemished in five outings. Paler finished with 12 points while Bugaoan scored all but one of his 11 markers off attacks for FEU.
Jude Garcia and skipper Richard Solis posted nine markers each for the Tams, who had 38 attack points thanks to Owen Suarez's 21 excellent sets.
The Red Warriors, who were led by Al-jhon Abalon's eight points, dropped their fourth straight game to slide down to 1-4 mark.
Meanwhile, University of Sto. Tomas returned on the winning track after taking down De La Salle University, 25-22, 25-18, 25-17, for a 3-2 slate.
Joshua Umandal finished with 18 points off 13 kills, three aces and a couple of kill blocks laced with seven excellent receptions to lead the Tigers, who lost rookie Jaron Requinton in the opening frame to a right ankle sprain.
"Pinaghandaan naman namin, although wala pa ring pang-closeout," said UST coach Odjie Mamon. "'Yung killer instinct, nilalaro pa namin."
Manuel Medina got nine markers while Jayvee Sumagaysay posted six for the Tigers, who came off a stinging loss to FEU last Saturday.
The Green Spikers dropped to 1-4 card.
Billie Anima had nine points while Kiefer Reyes posted seven points for DLSU.
