Much better na, at my end, di ko na siya palalaruin, sit out na -- UST coach Kungfu Reyes on injured Milena Alessandrini
University of Sto. Tomas head coach Kungfu Reyes is looking at sitting out injured Milena Alessandrini for the rest of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.
The sophomore open spiker sustained a partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear on her left knee on Saturday in the Tigresses’ 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 25-27, loss to Far Eastern University.
According to the final diagnosis, Alessandrini suffered a partial ACL tear, Grade 3 sprain of MCL (medial collateral ligament) and LCL (lateral collateral ligament). A two-week rehab was recommended and her recovery during that stretch would determine if she’ll be able to return to action with a knee support or undergo an operation.
“Two weeks na ita-try i-rehab kung maganda progress pwedeng ilaro pero sa papel pwedeng ilaro,” said Reyes, who added that Alessandrini remains in high spirits despiter her injury.
“Of course, ia-assess pa rin namin, di namin isusugal si Milena na just for the sake manalo or makapaglaro,” he added. “Masisira ‘yung bata so di naman kami ganun ka-ignorante na isugal kung ano meron.”
Alessandrini’s left knee buckled after an awkward landing following a spike in the second set with UST holding an 18-17 lead. She was in tears and grimacing in pain as she was stretchered off the court before being rushed to UST hospital for an MRI.
But even with the possibility of Alessandrini recovering during the two-week rehab, Reyes feels that his prized hitter won’t function well both physically and mentally.
“Kahit na ano, kahit sabihing ma-stabilize within two weeks, lumakas, may ano eh mental baggage,” he said. “Definitely, di rin makakapag-perform. Much better na, at my end, di ko na siya palalaruin, sit out na.”
“Again ang ano namin is sana gumaling agad (si Milena). ‘Yun ang importante. As of now medyo pahinga na,” said Reyes. “Kung kami lang din masusunod, again kung anong i-advise ng doctor, kami din on our part gagawin ang lahat para sa bata ang welfare niya. It’s not about UAAP, siyempre welfare ng tao especially those who got injured.”
