University of Sto. Tomas scored an upset over three-time defending champion De La Salle University.
University of Sto. Tomas played an inspired game to score a shocking 25-20, 25-22, 25-17, upset win over three-time defending champion De La Salle University on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Rookie Eya Laure and Sisi Rondina showed the way to help the Tigresses, who used the absence of injured Milena Alessandrini (knee injury) as rallying point to get back on the winning track and improve to 3-2 wi-loss slate tied with their victim and Far Eastern University.
Rondina finished with 19 points coming off 17 spikes and two kill blocks laced with 14 excellent receptions while Laure shone in her first UST-DLSU game with 15 markers, anchored on 13 attacks, and 17 digs. Dimdim Pacres chipped in eight points and 13 digs for the Tigresses, who lost Alessandrini last Saturday to a partial ACL tear and Grade 3 MCL and LCL sprain.
"Big win talaga. Motivated, maganda ang gising ng mga player,” said UST coach Kungfu Reyes. “Big win para sa amin. Dedicated din 'yung laban para kay Amiga. Pinilit namin na ihabol dun talaga sa FEU game but we came short. Ngayon nakapaghanda kami physically, mentally naihanda namin ang mga bata that’s why ganyan ang outcome ng laro.”
UST handed the Lady Spikers its second straight defeat since bowing down to Ateneo de Manila University in Season 77 Finals and first two-game elims losing slump since DLSU forfeited 11 straight games after fielding ineligible player Jacq Alarca in Season 70.
The Tigresses also defeated the Lady Spikers in straight sets in Season 78 – the last time UST scored a win over DLSU.
UST came into the game firing on all cylinders and sustained its momentum to keep DLSU at bay the whole match. The Tigresses went neck-and-neck against the Lady Spikers in the second frame after cruising in the first set. Rondina and Laure did most of the damage in the third as UST went up, 22-14, for a safe cusion to complete the rout.
No DLSU player scored in double figures with Norielle Ipac, Aduke Ogunsanya and Jolina Dela Cruz posting only eight points each. Skipper Des Cheng was limited to only seven markers for the Lady Spikers, who committed 23 errors and allowed the Tigresses to pound them with 41 attacks.
