Ateneo de Manila University scored their first win of the UAAP Season 81 Men’s Football Tournament, defeating Season 80 runners-up University of Santo Tomas, 5-0, Thursday afternoon at the FEU-Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.
A handball violation committed by UST late in the first half swayed momentum to Ateneo’s side, as star striker Jarvey Gayoso found the back of the net for the first time in Season 81, converting off a penalty just before halftime.
The fourth-year striker wasn’t done, as he doubled the Ateneo lead off a free kick in the 50th minute.
Ateneo team captain Julian Roxas also chipped in with a goal of his own off a well-placed pass from Andreas Maniquis in the 59th minute.
Ten minutes later, Rupert Baña also joined in on the scoring party, as he finished off another perfectly-timed assist to make it a 4-0 advantage.
In the 84th minute, Luka Alleje put on the finishing touches as he made it a five-nil drubbing in favor of the Blue Eagles.
The Growling Tigers simply couldn’t get good looks, as their chances often ended up in the mitts of Ateneo keeper AJ Arcilla.
"I'm so happy talaga regarding the result, number one, we got the most important thing, the three points, second thing, nag-improve talaga yung finishing namin. The past three grames ,we had a lot of chances, pero hindi namin na-finish yung chances namin, so I'm so happy talaga, especially today, yung finishing especially yung third goal, yung fourth goal, talagang it's good credit for the players kasi we practiced that talaga," said Ateneo head coach Jaypee Merida, who emphasized that they focused on their finishing following the loss to UP.
"After the defeat sa UP, talagang 80% of our sessions was more in finishing talaga, and I'm so happy today na nakuha namin yung three points," Merida added.
For Gayoso, who went scoreless in their first three matches, the former UAAP MVP was happy to finally see the ball hit the back of the net.
"I could not be more grateful that I was able to contribute to the team, from the past games, we’ve been having trouble finding the back of the net, but I’m happy that I was able to score for the team and start the run, the scoring run," he expressed. "We just take everything as a positive at the moment, and it’s good that we’re motivated by this."
With the win, Ateneo improves to four points on one win, one draw, and two losses.
UST meanwhile, drops to one win, two draws, and one loss for five points.
