UAAP 81 Football: Vergara brace leads DLSU past UP
Rookie Shanden Vergara scored twice to help lead DLSU to a 2-1 victory over defending champions UP in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament

De La Salle University notched their biggest win so far in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament after a brace from rookie Shanden Vergara helped lead the Green Archers past defending champions University of the Philippines, 2-1, Thursday morning at the FEU-Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.

The Green Archers have been up and down so far this season, alternating losses and wins in their first four matches. Coming off a 2-0 win over NU last Sunday however, DLSU looked to finally get a streak going.

A free kick from Vergara broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, and then the first-year midfielder found the back of the net again in the 65th minute with a high-angle volley that found its way into the back of the net.

The Green Archers made the mistake of celebrating too early, as UP pulled one back in the very next possession, with Kyle Magdato breezing through the defenses for a 66th minute conversion.

While Vergara was definitely the man of the hour on the defensive end, another rookie in first-year keeper Domycko Villacin was the star on the defensive end, coming up with a pair of crucial saves late to preserve the 2-1 scoreline.

Tensions began to mount towards the end, as the physicality of the match began to take its toll, and things got a little heated between both sides.

Fortunately, the situation did not escalate any further, and only a yellow cards were handed out.

At the end of 90 minutes, it was DLSU who came away with their third win of the season, ending UP's remarkable 16-match unbeaten streak dating back to Season 80.

"Gaya nung sinabi namin from the start, hindi pwede yung erratic, yung win-lose-win-lose. At least ito yung second win namin coming off a win, hindi yung from a loss," said DLSU coach Alvin Ocampo after the match. "Yung confidence ba, madagdagan yung confidence nung mga bata. Kulang sa mileage to, kasi karamihan mga rookies, at least nararamdaman nila yung feeling ng manalo at matalo ba. Siyempre matuto ba."

With the win, DLSU improves to three wins and two losses for nine points.

UP meanwhile, suffers their first loss since the semifinals of UAAP Season 79, as they drop to two wins and a loss for six points.
