Coach Oliver Almadro really motivated Deanna Wong, and it showed in a big win at the Battle of Katipunan.
Ateneo Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro knew Deanna Wong would have a big game sooner rather than later, and it paid off in his team's 25-21, 25-15, 28-26 victory over the UP Lady Maroons.
More than her 16 excellent sets, Wong played a huge role in the three-set victory, drilling the game-winning drop to propel Ateneo to the top of the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament standings.
'Coach O' also made sure people and Wong herself are reminded that she is the defending UAAP Best Setter.
"Hindi siya magiging best setter than nothing, I’m really pushing her to be the best setter that she is and iyon naman ang meron," said the first-year coach.
Almadro then added that he really motivated her, and it showed in a big win at the Battle of Katipunan.
"Deanna responded today. and ‘yung last point na iyon, it’s hers, hindi sa akin iyon. So ibig sabihin na she has the ability, she has the talent, talagang she has to believe in herself and believe in anong capabilities niya pa," furthered the coach.
For her part, Wong explained that the week-long layoff was big for the team, and further fueled by their desire to deliver against a top team like UP.
When asked about the final point of the game, Wong answered that she merely followed her gut feeling, which ultimately led to their fourth win of the season.
"Actually what coach O says na high risk, high reward, so parang laging that’s what in my head and parang I trusted myself lang," Wong said.
