UAAP Season 81: Glorioso fuels Blue Eagles' back-to-back wins

Gian Glorioso dropped 20 points in Ateneo de Manila University's second straight win.
Ateneo de Manila University recovered from a second set meltdown to knot its second straight win at the expense of listless University of the Philippines, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-13, Sunday in the in the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Gian Glorioso waxed-hot with 20 points, blasting 13 attacks with six kill blocks and an ace, to power the Blue Eagles to their third win in five outings tied with Adamson University.
Ateneo saw its comfortable 20-13 lead in the second set evaporate as the Fighting Maroons fought back to steal the frame.
“I always tell them naman na don’t take any team lightly kasi everyone is out there to get them. Everyone is out there to try to get a set or a win from us. I always tell them that you have to be always confident with everything that you do and of course they shouldn’t hesistate,” said Ateneo coach Timmy Sto. Tomas.
“’Yun kasi ang nagiging problema eh when it comes to big leads like that, there were time na nagre-relax ang mga bata. Masyadong nagiging complacent. As much as possible I always remind them that they should start right and end right,” he added.
The Blue Eagles were able to regroup in the third set to regain control of the match.
Chumason Njigha had 12 points while Tony Koyfman and John Rivera score 11 and 10 markers, respectively, for Ateneo, who will take on Adamson University next before facing off with defending champion National University in a rematch of last year’s Finals.
Earl San Pedro was the only Fighting Maroon in double figures with 14 points – all from attacks – while Gian San Pascual had eight markers for UP, which remained winless in five tries.
