Lady Eagles draw first blood in Battle of Katipunan
Ateneo de Manila moved up to solo lead after earning its fourth straight win.

Ateneo de Manila University made its Katipunan neighbor bleed as the Lady Eagles captured their fourth straight win, 25-21, 25-15, 28-26, Sunday to take the solo lead in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles weathered the closing stretch pressure mounted by the Lady Maroons to improve to 4-1 win-loss record.

Veterans Kat Tolentino, Maddie Madayag and Bea De Leon kept Ateneo together in the last frame to turn back UP and hand the Lady Maroons their second loss in five games.

“Mahirap ang game na ito kasi alam mo UP, high morale, they really played well, they really fought hard, but my players kasi they really seek deep inside them what they really want and iyon ang nangyari,” said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro. “Sabi ko sa kanila, whatever you really want to happen, it can happen as long as you really want it and you can get it.”

Madayag had 14 points highlighted by six kill blocks, Tolentino got 12 markers off 10 attacks with 14 digs while Ponggay Gaston posted 10 points with all but one coming off spikes with 10 excellent receptions for Ateneo. Jules Samonte had eight markers and De Leon added five including two in the final stretch of the third frame.

Ateneo controlled the first two sets but found resistance from UP in the third frame. The Lady Eagles held a 17-14 lead only to see the Lady Maroons tie it at 20 off a hit by Isa Molde.

De Leon and Tolentino conspired to give the Lady Eagles a 23-21 lead before UP tied it again at 23. Tolentino pushed Ateneo at match point but Marianne Buitre answered back to force a deuce. The Lady Eagles again moved at match point before Marist Layug and Buitre scored back-to-back hits to take the set point.

Madayag then blocked Layug, Justine Dorog, who before the game fainted and stretchered out of the venue because of menstrual cramps, committed an attack error before setter Deanna Wong sealed the win with a drop ball.

Skipper Tots Carlos had a quiet outing with 10 points while Gannaban had seven for UP, which committed 26 miscues. Molde, who was averaging 16.75 points in their previous games, went cold with just six markers.
