FEU hands defending champions UP back-to-back losses in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament.
Far Eastern University continued to roll in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament, as they handed defending champions University of the Philippines their second straight loss, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.
Fresh off a 2-1 win over National University last Thursday, FEU wasted very little time in getting on the board, scoring in just the second minute of the match.
Looking to avoid back-to-back losses, UP was aggressive on the offensive end as they attempted to pull even, but just could not the finish that they wanted.
In the 83rd minute, Jermi Darapan doubled the FEU lead with a high volley that the UP keeper could not alter.
Three minutes later, the Fighting Maroons got some unintended but much-needed help as FEU's Kim Minsu wound up scoring on his own goal to pull one back for UP and make the final four minutes of action a little more interesting.
With a draw within reach once again, UP pushed the action but was unable to find the equalizer.
"It think our players did their best, and they didn't give up, even under the really hot weather. That's why they weren't able to show their 100 percent, and it's the same with UP. It was about which team was mentally strong, and our team was really more focused on our game, that's why luck was in our favor and we got the win," said FEU head coach Bobae Park.
With the win, FEU moves up to the top of the standings with 11 points off three wins and two draws. Park hopes that with the impressive start, his wards don't become complacent and begin to relax.
"I hope that our players don't become lazy at this point. We tell our players not to think about the points, it's about how we maintain our shape and show our game system."
UP, meanwhile, remains at six points off two wins and two losses in four matches played.
