UAAP Season 81: Lady Bulldogs upset Lady Maroons in thriller

National University arrested a three-game slide at the expense of suddenly-skidding University of the Philippines.
National University showed nerves of steel to save four match points and pull off a huge upset over University of the Philippines, 25-17, 14-25, 17-25, 25-23, 17-15, Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Bulldogs came back after trailing, 1-2, in the match and from a 10-14 deficit in the fifth set to arrest a three-game losing slump for a 2-4 win-loss card.
"Sa amin naman every match ang lagi lang naming ini-instill sa kanila na just enjoy the game, nothing to lose, enjoy pero di mako-compromise yung focus and always mag-smile. Yun lang ang aming pinanggagalingan," said NU coach Norman Miguel.
NU scored five straight points after trailing in the closing stretch of the fifth frame capped by an Ivy Lacsina kill to take a 15-14 lead. Isa Molde stopped the bleeding for the Lady Maroons with a hit.
Lacsina pushed the Lady Bulldogs back on top, before Gelina Luceno sealed the big win with a kill block on Tots Carlos.
Rookie Princess Robles scored 17 points off 10 attacks and seven aces with 21 excellent receptions while Lacsina added 16 markers built on 12 spikes and four kill blocks for NU, who punished the UP with 15 aces including nine in the fitrst set.
Veterans Roselyn Doria and Audrey Paran chipped in 12 markers each while rookie libero Jennifer Nierva tallied 29 excellent receptions and 26 digs for the Lady Bulldogs, who survived the match despite committing 42 errors. Joni Chavez tallied 26 excellent sets with 22 digs and seven points for NU.
Robles rallied the Lady Bulldogs from an 18-21 deficit in the fourth set by landing two aces in in NU’s 4-0 blast to take the lead, 22-21. Justine Dorog tied it at 22 before the Lady Bulldogs’ 3-1 counter to force the deciding frame.
The Lady Maroons, who in the opening set went down 1-11, absorbed their second straight defeat to slide to 3-3 card at solo fifth.
Carlos and Justine Dorog got 15 points each while Molde finished with 13 markers for the Diliman-based squad. Ayel Estranero posted 24 excellent sets for UP.
