Palaban kami and hindi kami sumusuko kahit na rookies kami -- Princess Robles
Rookie Princess Robles saw a silver lining in the young National University’s two victories in the first round of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.
“Sa dalawang panalo na ‘yun nakita namin doon ang teamwork namin,” said Robles on Saturday after the feisty Lady Bulldogs came up short against the seasoned Ateneo de Manila University, 25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 17-25, at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
NU ended the first round with a 2-5 win-loss record at solo sixth spot. The Lady Bulldogs swept University of the East before coming up with a huge upset win over one of the season’s top title contenders University of the Philippines in five sets Wednesday.
“As a rookie po, like sina Ivy (Lacsina), happy kami sa kung anong naging resulta ng first round namin and yun po i-workout na lang namin kung ano ang kulang sa amin,” said Robles, who led the Bulldogs with 18 points and gave the Lady Eagles a tough challenge with her 15 kills, two aces and a kill block.
NU lost top scorer 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago after last season while its veteran core skipped the tournament for various reasons. Many thought that the rookie-laden Lady Bulldogs would struggle but NU proved them wrong with their grit and determination.
NU earned the respect of the Lady Eagles with the Lady Bulldogs’ gallant stand.
“Nandoon naman po kami. Paakyat naman po ang laro so sa akin happy ako sa kung anuman ang kinalabasan kanina as a rookie,” said Robles, who had 21 excellent receptions for an all-around game.
“Sabi nga ni Jen (Nieverva), kasi seniors sila kailangan naming pantayan kung ano sila,” she added. “Alam naming palaban sila kaya kailangan din naming mas ibabawan sila doon.”
Robles vowed that NU will be a more dangerous team in the second round.
“’Yun po na palaban kami and hindi kami sumusuko kahit na rookies kami,” she said. “Kailangan kung sino man ang makatapat namin kailangan higitan namin sila.”
