Lady Spikers dominate Lady Tams in Finals rematch
Four-peat-seeking De La Salle University reasserted its mastery over Far Eastern University.

Three-time defending champion De La Salle University survived Far Eastern University’s late third set charge to score an emphatic sweep, 25-15, 25-19, 26-24, Saturday to close the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament first round of eliminations at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Spikers dominated FEU in the rematch of last year’s championship series to improve to 5-2 win-loss record at solo second spot.

DLSU came back from a 20-22 deficit in the third set to take a 23-22 lead before the Lady Tams answered with back-to-back hits from Jerilli Malabanan and rookie Lycha Ebon to move at set point.

Tin Tiamzon saved a set point before FEU committed back-to-back errors to yield the match.

"Siguro first two sets nagulat ang FEU, ginrab nami ang opportunity habang ganoon ang kinikilos nila. Sinamantala namin and 'yun maganda naman ang naging result ng first two sets," said DLSU coach Ramil De Jesus, whose squad swept the Lady Tams in Season 80 Finals best-of-three series - both in straight sets.

"Eventually, pagdating ng third set nakikilala na nila ang isa’t isa, medyo nakakalaro na sila ng maayos at mayroon na silang connection inside the court, nakapitan lang namin sa third set," he added.

Tiamzon finished with 13 points off nine spikes, three aces and a kill block while adding six excellent receptions for DLSU, which received 28 points off FEU's errors. May Luna got 10 markers while rookie Jolina Dela Cruz and Lourdes Clemente registered nine and eight points, respectively, for the Lady Spikers.

Des Cheng saw limited minutes after skipping DLSU's win over University of the East last week due to a right shoulder injury. She entered the game in the second set with the Lady Spikers up, 22-18. Cheng closed the set with a kill before calling it a day.

DLSU caught FEU flat footed to open the match, racing to an 8-1 lead in the first set to control the frame. The Lady Spikers again waxed-hot early in the second set and built a comfortable lead before the Morayta-based squad woke up in late in the third only to fade in the end.

The Lady Tams slid to 4-3 slate.

Ebon was the lone bright spot for FEU with 10 points and nine digs. Jerrili Malabanan got nine markers while Celine Domingo was shutdown to only seven points for the Lady Tams.
