UAAP 81: Red-hot Lady Eagles wary of tough round 2

Fly high Lady Eagles.

Ateneo de Manila University ended round 1 of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament on an absolute tear, sealing first place Saturday with a four-set win against the pesky NU Lady Bulldogs.

After an opening-weekend loss to bitter rival La Salle, the Lady Eagles have won six straight, pacing the league with a 6-1 record.

Still, while Ateneo is on a roll, the Lady Eagles are wary of round 2.

They know the road to the Final Four is about to get even tougher.

“First round is a really tough one for us. We really learned a lot from here,” head coach Oliver Almadro said.

“But I tell my players that going to the second round is going to be tough. It will not be easier for us going to the second round,” he added.

Ateneo should be at least one game better than the rest of the field when round 2 kicks off however, with the way Season 81 has turned out, all four playoff spots are still pretty much up for grabs.

The Lady Eagles had a brief taste of the unpredictability against NU as they surrendered the opening set against the upstart Lady Bulldogs.

Ateneo also almost gave up a 2-1 lead in the third set.

“We really have to put in more effort and sacrifice,” coach O said.

“Hopefully the positivity and energy will manifest in the second round,” he added.
