University of the Philippines veterans Ayel Estranero and Tots Carlos breathed a sigh of relief after the Lady Maroons ended a two-game slide to end the first round of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.

“Well, for me, I'm so happy kasi after all our struggles the past games, nakapaglaro kami ulit ng maayos. Yeah, ‘yung finishing namin hindi pa ganoon kapulido pero if gusto naman talaga namin nakukuha naman namin (ang panalo),” said Carlos, who dropped 14 points in UP’s 25-27, 25-14, 25-12, 25-21, victory over Adamson University on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Lady Maroons rediscovered their winning ways after back-to-back defeats at the hands of league-leading Ateneo de Manila University and National University.

“Moving forward, going to the second round, malaking confidence booster siya for the team,” said Estranero, who tallied 28 excellent sets and scored four. “It's good to know na kaya talaga namin manalo if we play together and we believe in each and every one and especially with our coaches.”

After starting the round with two straight wins, UP dropped three of their next four games before getting a respite to improve to 4-3 win-loss record tied with Far Eastern University.

“Sobra eh. Kasi sa part namin ni Ayel, lalo na co-captains kami nila Isa (Molde), mahirap siya for us,” said Carlos. “Kasi parang nagkukulang kami na i-lead ‘yung team. So a’yun, ‘yun nga, confidence booster talaga siya.”

The win gave the Lady Maroons the confidence they need heading into the second round.

“It's really a big thing, especially na more on seniors nga kami sa loob. So much is really expected from us. And we can't just say na there's so much pressure. We really have to push each other to play well,” Estranero said. “So ayun, today it's very evident that we played together, and we just really enjoyed the game. Those are really, big factors for us to win more games in the second round.”
