Rupert Baña scored twice to help Ateneo dominate NU, 4-0 in the UAAP Men's Football Tournament.
Ateneo de Manila University continues their impressive turnaround in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football tournament after defeating National University, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.
Targeting a third-consecutive victory, the Blue Eagles got on the board quick, with Rupert Baña scoring in just the fifth minute of action.
Three minutes later, Mark Nacional, who had a brace in his last outing against Adamson University, also chipped in to double the Blue Eagles lead even before the ten-minute mark of the match.
Momentum continued to swing in Ateneo's favor in the second half, as Baña found the back of the net with an easy tip-in in the 58th minute for a brace of his own, pushing the Ateneo lead t 3-0.
In the 82nd minute, substitute Martin Ordoñez also joined in on the Blue Eagle scoring spree, putting Ateneo ahead by four goals with less than ten minutes left.
"Even this last week, we've been focusing sa finishing, every session there's finishing, different setup lang but the objective is the same, so I think for me, yun siguro yung [nakatulong] sa amin kaya nakuha namin yung consistency sa game," said Ateneo head coach Jaypee Merida, touching in Ateneo's marked improvement on the offensive end for the last three matches.
Merida also praised Baña, who has stepped up on offense for the Blue Eagles as well.
"Nung tinitignan namin who wanted to play as number nine, and grabe din yung naging effect nung pagka-lagay kay Baña sa number nine, and we put Jarvey [Gayoso] sa flanks to give he freedom."
"Yung expectation ng other teams is to focus on Jarvey, ang maganda ngayon, nandoon parin yung priority kay Jarvey, pero yung moment na ma-lock in si Jarvey, yung assists naman niya yung lumalabas, which is good for the team."
With the win, Ateneo makes it three commanding wins in a row as the Blue Eagles improve to three wins, one draw, and two losses for ten points.
NU meanwhile, drops to one win, two draws, and four losses as they finish the first round with five points.
