King Miyagi's last-minute goal gives UP the 2-1 win over UE in UAAP Men's Football Action
A last-minute goal from King Miyagi in injury time was the difference-maker as defending champions University of the Philippines snapped a three-game winless streak by coming from behind to defeat University of the East, 2-1, in UAAP Season 81 Men's Football action, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.
The Fighting Maroons once again found themselves in early trouble as they were the first ones to concede a goal as Jasper Absalon scored for the Red Warriors in the 42nd minute.
In the second half, following a highly-charged halftime pep talk, so to say, from head coach Anto Gonzales, the Fighting Maroons responded by tightening up their defense and holding the Red Warriors to their side of the pitch.
In the 62nd minute of action, UP finally managed to pull even courtesy of a Christian Lapas equalizer.
The turning point of the match however, came from ailing striker Miyagi, who managed to beat the UE defense and fire off what would be the game-winning goal in injury time.
UE attempted a last ditch effort to come up with their own equalizer, but was unable to do so after 90 minutes plus injury time.
"They responded well, they turned things around in the second half, and they covered the small details and they played so much better," said Gonzales after the match.
With the win, UP earns their third of the season to improve to three wins, one draw, and two losses for ten points.
UE meanwhile, drops to two wins, one draw, and four losses at seven points to end the first round of action.
