University ended a two-game skid at the expense of Adamson University.
University of the Philippines rediscovered its winning ways after recovering from a first set meltdown to turn back Adamson University, 25-27, 25-14, 25-12, 25-21, Sunday to close the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament first round at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons snapped a two-game slide to improve to 4-3 win-loss record tied with Far Eastern University.
Still, UP head coach Godfrey Okumu was far from satisfied with his wards’ game.
“Today we won but again our finishing is not up to the standard we want it to be,” said Okumu.
UP got a scare late in the fourth set after the Lady Falcons saved four match points in a run highlighted by Bernadette Flora’s back-to-back aces before Chiara Permentilla’s attack for a 24-21 count. Marist Layug sealed the win with an off speed hit.
Isa Molde scored 14 points off 11 spikes, two aces and a kill block while Tots Carlos finished with 14 markers and 26 digs for the Lady Maroons. Layug had 11 points while Ayel Estranero tallied 28 excellent sets to help UP uncork 53 spikes.
The Lady Maroons started on the wrong foot as UP squandered a 22-18 lead to trail Adamson, 24-23, off a Bernadette Flora ace. The Lady Maroons saved two set points but Carlos committed an error in the next play before MJ Igao won the joust as the Lady Falcons stole the set.
UP was quick to recover to take the next three frames.
Adamson, which absorbed back-to-back losses, dropped to 1-6 slate at the bottom of the standings tied with University of the East.
Joy Dacoron scored 15 points while Eli Soyud and Flora got 10 and eight markers, respectively, for the Lady Falcons.
