Bagunas, Medina lead top first round performers
Bryan Bagunas of National University tallied 141 points to take the top spot in scoring after the first round of UAAP Season 81 men's volleyball tournament.

National University star Bryan Bagunas and University of Sto. Tomas main man Manuel Andrei Medina strengthened their respective bids for individual honors after their impressive showings in the first round of the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament.

Bagunas, last year’s Finals Most Valuable Player, was the runaway leader in scoring with 141 points accumulated after seven games. He pounded 124 kills, 10 kill blocks and seven aces for the reigning champions.

The national team member registered an eye-popping 50.41% success rate in attacks or landing 124 kills out of 246 attempts. Bagunas took the third spot in the service game with 0.31 ace per frame.

Medina, on the other hand, trailed Bagunas in points with 117 off 95 attacks, 15 kill blocks and seven aces. The Tigers ace spiker had a 36.96% attack efficiency rate with 0.50 kill blocks per set, 0.23 ace per frame and decent floor defense with 2.33 digs per frame.

Rounding up the Top 5 scorers were Joshua Umandal of UST (109), John Millete of University of the Philippines (107) and Paolo Pablico of Adamson (101).

Behind Bagunas in the attacking department were Far Eastern University’s JP Bugaoan (50.00%), Redijohn Paler (45.90) and Jude Garcia (45.12%) and Umandal (40.59%).

Jayvee Sumagaysay of UST dominated the blocking category with 0.70 kill block per set followed by Bugaoan (0.62), University of the East rookie Lloyd Josafat (0.58), Garcia (0.58), and Adamson University’s Mark Alvarez and De La Salle University’s Kiefer Reyes, who averaged 0.52 kill block each.

Garcia took the top spot in the service department with an average of 0.35 ace per frame ahead of Pablico (0.32), Bagunas (0.32), Paler (0.31) while NU’s James Natividad and Hernel Corda of UST normed with 0.27 ace per frame.

Ateneo de Manila University’s Lawrence Magadia topped rival setters with an average of 8.04 excellent sets per frame. Trailing him were NU rookie Joshua Retamar (7.86), Owen Suarez of FEU (6.92), Timothy Tajanlangit (6.90) and Adrian Imperial of UE (5.69).

Manuel Sumanguid of Ateneo led in digs with 4.46 digs per set followed by Jesus Valdez of Adamson (4.24), John Miguel Nasol of UP (3.50), Ricky Marcos of NU (3.41) and DLSU’s Rafael Macaspac (2.72). Vince Patrick Lorenzo of FEU topped the reception category with 63.19% efficiency rate ahead of Leo Miranda of Adamson (62.50%), Valdez (62.44%), Lester Sawal (61.26%) and Marcos (60.45%).
