Ateneo's Madayag surprised by career-high output vs. UST
"I just played my game, I just contributed what I can for the team." - Maddie Madayag

Ateneo de Manila's Maddie Madayag sure picked a good game to put up some career-best stats.

The senior middle blocker scored a career-high 23 points and 11 blocks to help lead the Lady Eagles come back from a two-set deficit and defeat the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses in a five-set thriller in UAAP Season 81 Women's Volleyball action, Wednesday afternoon at the San Juan Arena.

Madayag's career-best 11 rejections was also the highest block tally in the Final Four era, surpassing the nine blocks held by former DLSU Lady Spiker Celine Hernandez.

The historic feat even came a shock to Madayag, who was rendered speechless upon learning of her accomplishment.

"Seryoso? I didn’t know that. I don't know what to say," Madayag said with a beaming smile.

As noteworthy as the feat was, Madayag maintains that it was all for the benefit of the team, who survived a scare from UST to push their winning streak to seven straight matches.

"I just played my game, I just contributed what I can for the team."

"This is for my team, this is for my school, this is for the Lord, it’s not really for myself, it’s for the team," she added.

Madayag also had nothing but praise for UST's star hitter Sisi Rondina, who exploded for her own career-best and league-best 35 markers.

"Sisi’s a really good player, she’s very good, she knows what to do talaga, very experienced. In Cebu naman she played really good."

"You really have to respect your opponent, kung alam mo yung ginagawa nila, then you should know better, you should know what to do," she concluded.
