UAAP 81 Football: DLSU beats Ateneo to grab solo-second
De La Salle edged out rivals Ateneo 2-1 to move into solo-second place in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament

De La Salle University halted Ateneo's three-game winning streak and moved into solo-second place with a 2-1 victory over the Blue Eagles, Thursday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Pitch in Quezon City.

It was an action-packed first half, with all three goals being scored within the first 26 minutes of action.

Fourth-year forward Rafael Montelibano was on fire early for the Green Archers as he made good on a Shanden Vergara assist with an easy tip-in near the goal in the 13th minute.

Just eleven minutes later, Montelibano found the back of the net once again, this time connecting on a header off a free kick from Jed Diamante to double the Green Archer advantage.

In the 26th minute, Senior Blue Eagle Rupert Baña was able to score off a header of his own to bring Ateneo to within one goal.

An equalizer would not materialize for Ateneo, as DLSU held on for the crucial victory.

"We had two quick goals, yun yung important dun, we ended the first round with a win and nasa loob kami ng Final Four right now, yun yung important sa amin. We start the second round fresh with a win," said DLSU head coach Alvin Ocampo.

With the win, DLSU slides into solo-second place with 12 points off four wins and three losses after the first round.

Ateneo meanwhile sits at third place with 10 points off three wins, one draw, and three losses to end the first round.
