Lady Maroons complete elims sweep of Lady Spikers
University of the Philippines scored an emphatic sweep of three-time defending champion De La Salle University.

ANTIPOLO CITY --- University of the Philippines made the three-time defending champion De La Salle University bleed Sunday as the Lady Maroons completed an elimination round sweep of the Lady Spikers, 25-16, 26-24, 25-19, in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Ynares Sports Center here.

Energized by their supporters, the Lady Maroons made short work of DLSU to forge a four-way tie at second spot with 5-3 win-loss slate with their victim, University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern University.

"Is this the peak of UP? No. I still feel there's more to come. We still can play better, it's just a matter of time. It's a good game. It's our lucky day today," said UP head coach Godfrey Okumu.

Tots Carlos scored 13 points, all from attacks, and added 11 digs and five excellent receptions while Isa Molde had 11 markers for the Lady Maroons, who defeated DLSU in five sets in their first meeting. Lorie Bernardo got five markers while setter Ayel Estranero tallied 10 excellent sets in a match where UP had plenty of help from DLSU's woeful 37 errors including 17 from the service line.

UP handed the Lady Spikers their first elims head-to-head sweep since bowing down to Ateneo de Manila University back in Season 79.

Down, 16-17, in the third set,  the Lady Maroons mounted 7-1 rally to take a 23-18 advantage capped by a Marist Layug kill block. Marianne Sotomil committed a service error in the next play but Lourdes Clemente wasted DLSU's golden opportunity to fightback with a terrible miscue at the service line before Molde sealed the win with a kill.

The Lady Spikers had a chance to steal the extended second set but a crucial service error by Jolina Dela Cruz gave the set point advantage back to the Lady Maroons before Jessma Ramos took advantage of DLSU's overreception to seal the set.

Des Cheng was the only Lady Spiker in double figures with 11 while Clemente, who had five service errors, and Dela Cruz posted six each.
