UAAP 81 Football: UST draws DLSU off last-minute goal
Rookie Miguel Mercader played hero for UST as he scored a last-minute equalizer to help hold DLSU to a 1-1 draw

A last-minute goal from Miguel Mercader saved University of Santo Tomas as they managed to hold De La Salle University to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.

With a chance to join Far Eastern University at the top of the standings and get revenge on UST for their 3-1 beating in the first round, the Green Archers were first to score, with rookie Shanden Vergara scoring in the 74th minute.

For the rest of the match, DLSU managed to keep the Growling Tigers at bay, stopping their offensive attacks and denying them easy shots on goal.

As the match went into injury time, it seemed as if DLSU had locked the win up, but in the final minute, a free kick from the left corner led to a scramble near the DLSU goal, and rookie Mercader took advantage, hitting the equalizer in the very-last play of the match.

"If one player gives up, then makaka-score yung opponent. Yung attitude namin, kung kelan naka-goal yung opponent, saka pa lang kami nag-sswitch on," lamented UST head coach Marjo Allado, who did not mince words regarding his team's propensity to give up early goals and play catch-up. "After nung goal, bumilis na naman yung laro namin eh, dun na naman yung bola sa penalty box. Yung rookie na si Mercader, at least naka-kuha siya ng goal."

"Kahit papano, same as last time, yung mga players gusto mag-score kaya naka-kuha kami ng isang goal, pero hindi dapat forever na draw na lang kami, kasi when it comes to standings, mahirap," he added.

UST settles for their fifth draw of the season to go with two wins and one loss for 11 points.

DLSU meanwhile moves to four wins, one draw, and three losses for 13 points.
