Bulldogs gain solo lead, Blue Eagles win back-to-back
Ateneo de Manila University solidified its hold of the third spot with a straight sets win over De La Salle University.

There’s no stopping National University.

The repeat-seeking Bulldogs continued with their winning romp and added University of the East to their growing list of victims with an emphatic 25-7, 25-21, 25-15, victory Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Bryan Bagunas blasted 15 spikes, landed four aces and had three kill blocks for 22 points to lead NU to its eight straight win for an 8-1 win-loss record and a first taste of the solo lead.

Rookie Angelo Almendras got 11 markers in just two sets of play in the Bulldogs’ 68-minute conquest.

NU dominated all skills department in the match smashing 39 kills compared to only 17 from the Red Warriors. The Bulldogs all controlled the blocking department (14-3) and the service game (9-3).

Rookie playmaker Joshua Retamar contributed 18 excellent sets for NU.

Clifford Inoferio finished with six points to lead UE, which slid to 2-7 slate.    

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University snatched its second straight win after prevailing over De La Salle University, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20, to solidify its hold of the solo third with a 6-3 card.

Tony Koyfman hammered 20 of his 22 points on kills while Ron Medalla and Chumason Njigha had 14 and 13 markers, respectively, for the Blue Eagles, who tallied 50 spikes.

The Green Spikers suffered their sixth loss in nine outings.

Cris Dumago had 15 points while Billie Anima got eight markers for DLSU.
