Deanna Wong set it all up for Ateneo to win its eighth straight
Ateneo de Manila University stretched its winning streak in the UAAP Season 81women’s volleyball tournament at the expense of Katipunan neighbor the University of the Philippines, Saturday at MOA Arena.
The Lady Eagles, however, had to overcome their 25 errors before scoring their eighth straight win.
More than that, they also had to get over what they saw in the second set - Lady Maroon Isa Molde going down due to a scary injury. "I think, we got so fazed by what happened. Buti na lang nung third set, we were able to deliver," Bea De Leon said.
The team captain then pointed to their setters as the ones who got them back on track. As she put it, "Personally, I was so erratic, buti na lang talaga there was Deanna [Wong], pati na rin si Jaja [Maraguinot] for a while. Sabi nila, kami bahala, we'll distribute the ball tapos dumepensa pa sila."
Indeed, Wong and Maraguinot set it all up so that Kat Tolentino, Maddie Madayag, Jules Samonte, and De Leon were still able to score somewhere between 15 to eight points.
In particular, fourth-year setter Wong had 24 excellent sets to her name.
More importantly, though, it was her voice that re-focused her teammates following the scary injury suffered by their opponent. "Deanna's performance is always there, but today, when most of my players were worried, sabi ko sa kanya, 'Kailangan ko ng leadership mo,'" head coach Oliver Almadro shared.
She then continued, "And she delivered. Malaking bagay yung nag-step up si Deanna to give back yung confidence nina Bea, Maddie, Kat, at Jules."
