Geo Chiu may very well have been the Most Improved Player in UAAP 81 - if only there were such award

If only there was an award for Most Improved Player in UAAP Juniors Basketball, Ateneo de Manila High School's Geo Chiu would have run away with it in Season 81.

The 6-foot-7, 18-year-old averaged a near double-double of 9.5 points and 9.8 rebounds to go along with 1.8 assists and 1.5 blocks.

This, after posting per game counts of 3.0 points, 6.4 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 0.9 blocks in Season 80.

Only, there is no such award for Most Improved Player.

Still, what matters most for Chiu is that, in his last year for the Blue Eaglets, he was able to harness the potential of his twin tower partnership with Kai Sotto.

Now their time as a fearsome twosome is up,  Chiu did nothing but acknowledge that Sotto had a big hand in his rise to becoming an NBTC All-Star. "Sa practice namin, super laki ng tulong ni Kai - singlaki niya," he kidded.

He then continued, "Lalo na rin sa games mismo na kapag naliligaw ako, siya una nagsasabi sa akin na 'Oy Geo, trabaho muna tayo.' o kaya 'Geo, kaya mo nang kainin yan.' Ganun yung reminders na kailangang kailangan ko e."

Indeed, during Ateneo games last season, the 7-foot-2, 16-year-old Filipino prodigy was on a constant lookout to help out his twin tower.

And that in itself was more than enough reason for the Ateneo team captain to believe in himself.

After all, the new hope of Philippine basketball has full faith in him. "Having a teammate na kagaya niya tapos sa kanya na mismo nanggaling yun, mabu-boost ka talaga e," he said.

He then continued, "Pero not just Kai lang. Itong performance ko, I won't be able to achieve it if not for my teammates kasi silang lahat, tinulungan talaga ako."

Now that Chiu is graduated and Sotto is bound for Atlanta in the US, and then somewhere still overseas after that, Ateneo High’s twin towers is no more.

Just like Sotto believed in Chiu, though, the latter expressed he had the former’s back wherever he goes. "Super happy ako for him kasi parang he's one step closer to his dream. Sa amin, kung saan siya masaya, doon din kami masaya," he said.
