Kailangan namin bumawi, ‘yung bawi na hindi lang puro salita kun'di yung bawi na may gawa -- Des Cheng on revenge win over UST
Graduating De La Salle University hitter Des Cheng and the rest of the Lady Spikers just had thing on their minds entering their rematch against University of Sto. Tomas on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
The three-time defending champions wanted to return the favor to their first round tormentors.
“Kailangan namin bumawi, ‘yung bawi na hindi lang puro salita kun'di yung bawi na may gawa,” said Cheng.
And avenge their loss they did, as the Lady Spikers broke the hearts of the Tigresses with a come-from-behind, 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 26-24, win to move to solo second spot in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.
“Siguro mas gusto lang namin manalo today. Mas gusto namin na gumanda ‘yung kung nasaan kami ngayon, ‘yung standing namin, and maglaro kami as one team, kaya ganoon ‘yung naging result,” said Cheng following the Lady Spikers’ revenge win over the same squad that dealt them a straight sets loss in the first round.
Cheng exploded for 20 points and DLSU’s vaunted net defense frustrated UST’s top hitters rookie Eya Laure and Sisi Rondina, who had to bleed for their attack points.
DLSU scored 12 kill blocks and was given 44 free points off the Tigresses’ miscues. Laure needed 59 attempts to get 16 of her spikes in while Rondina had an 18-of-51 clip on attacks.
The Lady Spikers’ heavy serves also disrupted the flow of UST’s offense.
DLSU’s victory gave the Taft-based squad some breathing room in the race for the Final Four and the twice-to-beat advantage.
DLSU improved to 7-3 win-loss slate.
“Well, obviously it's very important right now kasi ‘pag natalo kami ngayon parang magkakaroon ng maraming tie, and then mahihirapan pa kaming bumangon again from a loss,” said Cheng. “Kailangang-kailangan talaga namin manalo para hindi lang ‘yung win, ‘yung standing, kun'di pati ‘yung confidence namin. Hindi kami malugmok ng sobra-sobra, nagsisimula na kami ngayon.”
The Lady Spikers’ remaining games are against Adamson University on Sunday, Ateneo (April 13), University of the East (April 24) and Far Eastern University (April 28).
“Siguro kailangan namin maging consistent na. Ganito na ‘yung gagalawin namin all throughout,” said Cheng. “Feeling ko kasi habang tumatagal mas lumalakas ‘yung mga teams. So kahit na ganoon na nothing to lose na ‘yung ibang teams, kailangan pa rin naming respetuhin sila kasi baka mamaya sila pa yung makadali sa team namin, unexpected.”
