Jarvey Gayoso scored twice to lead Ateneo past DLSU, 3-1 in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football Tournament
Star striker Jarvey Gayoso scored twice as Ateneo de Manila University gained a measure of revenge over collegiate rivals De La Salle University with a 3-1 win in the second round of the UAAP Season 81 Men’s Football Tournament, Thursday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.
The Green Archers were victorious in their first round encounter, snapping Ateneo’s three-match winning streak with a 2-1 win to end the first round.
Early on in their second round meeting, it looked like the Green Archers were on their way to sweep the season series with Mauro Acot firing off a long-range strike to put DLSU ahead in just the tenth minute.
It didn’t take long for Ateneo to respond however, as Gayoso hit the first of this two conversions just six minutes later to pull the Blue Eagles even.
Ateneo took over the driver’s seat just before halftime, with Mark Nacional dropping it off to Rupert Baña for the go-ahead goal in the 42nd minute.
Action tightened up in the second half, as DLSU tried to push the pace in search of an equalizer.
Ateneo on the other hand, kept their rivals at bay, and at the 83-minute mark, Gayoso put the match away with a nifty finish, filipping it over the DLSU keeper for the 3-1 lead.
"I think this is a testament to the way we've worked, the way we've kept ourselves inspired, the way we've kept ourselves hungry despite the wins and of course coming from that slow start," said Gayoso. "I think it's a good sign that we're doing everything right at the moment, but we know that we're not done yet. It's not over, so we continue to take everything, all the lapses that we had for this game and work on it for the next game."
With the win, Ateneo remains undefeated in the second round and regains the top spot with 19 points off six wins, one draw, and three losses.
DLSU meanwhile, drops to four wins, one draw, and five losses for 13 points.
