"Super-sub" Steven Anotado came up big once again for UST, scoring the go-ahead goal to push them past UE, 2-1
University of Santo Tomas has scored back-to-back wins for the first time in the UAAP Season 81 Men's Football tournament after holding off University of the East, 2-1, Thursday afternoon at the FEU Diliman Football Field in Quezon City.
The Growling Tigers went ahead late in the first half after skipper Ian De Castro opened the scoring with a header off a free kick in the 45th minute.
Looking to make a push for the semifinals, the Red Warriors answered back in the second half, with Krysler Opeña finding the equalizer in the 59th minute.
Seemingly headed for yet another draw, UST banked on super-sub striker Steven Anotado, who put the Growling Tigers ahead with a fantastic turn-and-fire attempt inside the box in the 87th minute.
With significant minutes of injury time added, UE looked to pull even once more, and came within inches, courtesy of striker Mar Diano, whose strike was denied by the left post.
UST holds on for the important win and their first winning streak of the season.
"Itong players na 'to, deserve naman nila manalo, kasi they tried their best eh, and we had chances early in the first half, hindi lang na-convert. A win is a win," said UST head coach Marjo Allado.
With the win, UST momentarily finds themselves in second place with four wins, five draws, and one loss for 17 points.
UE meanwhile stays at the bottom of the standings with two wins, two draws, and five losses for eight points.
