Steven Anotado (9) is UST's leading scorer, and he has managed to do it while coming off the bench.
University of Santo Tomas' Steven Anotado is once again having another excellent year in terms of scoring.
The senior striker, who's on his second year back since missing a couple of years due to injury, is currently the Growling Tigers' leading goal-getter with five made, as last season's runners-up try to reach for another deep run in the post-season.
The only difference however is that this season, Anotado is coming off the bench.
Time and time again this year, Anotado has provided a much-needed spark off the pine for the Growling Tigers, who have found themselves trailing in matches more times than they would like.
Last Thursday against University of the East, the Growling Tigers once again banked on the last-minute heroics of Anotado, who came in late and scored the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute to power UST to back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Coming off the bench, Anotado says, is no concern, as it allows him to take advantage of the opponents' fatigue late in the game.
"Sa akin, okay naman sa akin yung ganun, kasi mas tine-take ko yung advantage, kasi medyo nga pagod na yung kalaban tapos ako, fresh legs pa, so advantage talaga pag fresh legs ka coming from the bench," Anotado told ABS-CBN Sports.
The gameplan, Anotado explained further, was to tire the opposing defenses out before unleashing the deadly striker as an offensive boost late in the match, or an instant source of offense if needed.
"Na-develop lang siguro, nag-start nung nag-goal ako against Adamson, so ayun, dun na nag-start na lagi akong sina-sub ni coach off the bench, tsaka lagi niyang inuuna si [Conrado] Dimacali tsaka si AJ [Pasion], parang part ng tactics kasi yun eh, papagurin muna nila coach yung kalaban bago ako i-sub-in," Anotado continued.
And while his scoring prowess could easily land him in the starting eleven of any other squad in the UAAP, Anotado has fully embraced his role as an offensive spark off the bench for UST. For Anotado, it's all about what will lead the team to more wins and hopefully, a men's football title this season.
"Okay lang naman sa akin yun, kasi hindi naman individual yung ano namin dito, yung main goal is manalo every game at tsaka mag-champion this season, kaya okay lang sa akin yung ganun, na ganun yung set-up na kahit sub ako, in-accept ko yun para sa team."The Growling Tigers are currently in third place with 17 points.
